What Is Vasectomy?
A vasectomy is a permanent, highly effective method of male contraception that involves cutting or sealing the vas deferens, the tubes responsible for carrying sperm from the testicles to the urethra. This procedure prevents sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation, thereby preventing pregnancy. Traditionally, vasectomies involved surgical incisions and repair, but now, there are scalpel-free, needle-free, and suture-free options available, making the procedure less invasive and leading to faster recovery times. If you are considering a vasectomy, we recommend scheduling a consultation to discuss the procedure in more detail and determine if it is the right choice for your needs. Since it’s minimally invasive, recovery after vasectomy is faster compared to traditional surgery, allowing individuals to return to their normal activities more quickly. This scalpel-free option reduces discomfort and complications, offering a less traumatic experience overall. Results

What is a vasectomy?
A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that involves cutting or blocking the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra. By interrupting the flow of sperm, a vasectomy provides a permanent solution for contraception.
Is there a non-invasive option?
There is a non-invasive option called the Scalpel-Free Vasectomy. This innovative technique eliminates the need for incisions and sutures, making it a less invasive and more comfortable option for patients. Instead of making incisions, a specialized instrument is used to create a small puncture in the scrotum, through which the vas derens are accessed and treated.
What are the side effects of the treatment?
Following the procedure, patients may experience temporary discomfort, swelling, or bruising at the site of the puncture, which is typically made in the scrotum. Some individuals may also encounter minor bleeding or infection, though these complications are relatively rare. As with any medical procedure, there is a potential for an adverse reaction to anasthesia or an allergic response to medications used during the vasectomy.Additional, while the procedure is designed to be reversible through a vasectomy reversal, it’s important for individuals to consider it as a permanent form of contraception.
What does Post op & Recovery look like?
Patients can expect minimal discomfort and downtime after the Scalpel-Free Vasectomy. The scrotal area may be slightly swollen or bruised, but there symptoms typically resolve within a few days. It’s essential to follow the post-operative instructions provided by your doctor to ensure a smooth recovery.
What does the full vasectomy process look like?
The process starts with your consultation, where Dr. Berlanga will review your medical history, answer your questions, and explain the procedure in detail. On procedure day, you’ll rest at home after your visit while carefully following the detailed aftercare instructions provided to ensure a smooth recovery. You’ll return for two semen checks — one at 6 weeks (after at least 15 ejaculations) and another at 12 weeks — to confirm sterility.
Is there special aftercare following the procedure?
Yes. You’ll be provided with detailed aftercare instructions to help ensure a smooth recovery. We recommend wearing an athletic supporter to provide proper support and minimize swelling. The athletic supporter is included in the cost of the procedure unless you are using insurance, in which case it can be purchased separately for $31.80.
How long until I can return to normal activities?
Light walking is allowed after the first day. Most patients return to work by day 4, but heavy exercise (like jogging, cycling, or weightlifting) should be avoided for at least one full week.
When can I resume sexual activity?
Most patients can resume sexual activity after one week, gradually increasing frequency over the following weeks as long as you are comfortable. However, it’s important to continue using another form of contraception until both semen checks confirm there are no sperm present.
When will I know if the vasectomy was successful?
You’ll complete two semen checks — one after 6 weeks and another at 12 weeks. You are only considered sterile after both samples confirm zero sperm. Semen checks are included at no extra charge for up to one year following your procedure.
What happens if I still have sperm after my semen checks?
Occasionally, it may take a little longer for sperm to fully clear. In most cases, additional time or ejaculations will resolve this, but Dr. Berlanga will guide you if any further steps are needed.
Are there any risks or possible side effects?
Vasectomy is generally very safe. Mild bruising, swelling, or tenderness are common but temporary. Rare side effects can include granulomas (small lumps), infection, prolonged soreness, or — very rarely — long-term discomfort. Serious complications are extremely uncommon, and there is no proven connection between vasectomy and long-term health issues like prostate cancer or high blood pressure.
What if I have questions after hours?
You’ll receive detailed contact information for after-hours concerns, and our physician is always reachable through the doctor exchange to assist you as needed.
