Our tongue-tie treatment, called a frenotomy or frenulectomy, is a quick, safe procedure designed to correct restricted tongue movement. This treatment can help alleviate feeding difficulties, prevent potential speech issues, and support healthy oral development.

What is a Tongue Tie?

Tongue-tie occurs when the tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth is unusually short or tight, which can restrict tongue movement. Our in-office procedure gently clips this tissue to improve mobility. Unlike hospital procedures that require anesthesia, our method is performed while the child is awake, minimizing risk and recovery time.

What to Expect

During the procedure, your child will be comfortably numbed with a topical anesthetic—no needles are used. The actual frenotomy is very quick, typically taking only about a minute. While some babies may make faces or small movements, discomfort is minimal, and many may coo or smile during the procedure. Parents may choose to stay in the room or step out, whichever is most comfortable. Nursing or bottle-feeding can usually begin immediately after the procedure once minor bleeding stops, and there is virtually no recovery time needed. Most babies resume normal activity right away, and no pain medications are required.

Results

Many babies experience immediate improvement in tongue mobility and feeding. While results vary, most issues related to tongue-tie are resolved quickly and safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my child be in pain during the procedure?
Very little. The tissue is thin, similar to clipping fingernails, and the topical anesthetic numbs the area. Children may make faces or small movements, but pain is minimal.
How long is the procedure?
The procedure takes about a minute.
What are the possible complications?
Complications are extremely rare. Minor bleeding may occur but typically stops on its own. Infection and regrowth of tissue are uncommon. Performing the procedure in-office eliminates risks associated with anesthesia.
When can my baby nurse after the procedure?
Nursing or bottle-feeding can begin immediately after the procedure once minor bleeding stops.
Is there any special preparation needed?
No special preparation is required.
Will this prevent future speech problems?
While tongue-tie treatment improves tongue mobility, results can vary. Some babies show immediate improvement in feeding or tongue function, while others may need additional support or therapy later.
